Kyu-Hwan Lee

I received my PhD from Seoul National University in 2001 and held post-doctoral positions at Seoul National University and at the University of Toronto. In 2005, I joined the University of Connecticut as an assistant professor and was promoted to full professor in 2017.
My research interests are in representation theory, number theory, combinatorics, mathematical physics, and AI for mathematics. In recent years, I have focused particularly on applying machine learning and AI tools to problems in pure mathematics. One notable outcome of this work is the discovery of murmuration phenomena in arithmetic data, which was featured in Quanta Magazine.
More recently, in collaboration, I proved that the Mathieu group M23 occurs as a Galois group over the rational numbers. Our paper resolves the final outstanding case among the 26 sporadic finite simple groups. By the 1980s, the other 25 sporadic groups had been realized as Galois groups over ℚ, while the M23 case remained open for decades. Our result completes this long-standing program.
